The 2011 Soros Justice Fellowships Program is now accepting applications. Lawyers, advocates, grassroots organizers, activist academics, and others with unique perspectives are encouraged to apply.  The fellowship projects must reflect one or more of the criminal justice fund priorities.

State Street Foundation Funds Human Services including Legal Assistance

The State Street Foundation provides funding for charitable organizations including human services to increase access to legal assistance. Soros Gives $35 Million to Support Low-Income Families in New York

George Soros, chairman of the Open Society Institute, announced that he will give $35 million to support low-income families in New York with buying school supplies and clothing for the new school year.  This money will go to the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and is in addition to the $140 million in stimulus dollars under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families emergency contingency fund of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

New Funding Opportunity for State-based Alliances Working to Advance Transparency, Equity and Accountability in the Economic Recovery; Currently Considering Proposals from CA, MS, NY, NC, TX & WI

The Open Society Institute (OSI) requests proposals to support state-based alliances that advocate for greater transparency, equity and accountability in the allocation federal recovery (stimulus) dollars at the state level. OSI is accepting proposals from the following states: CA, MS, NY, NC, TX and WI.

Deadline: August 28, 2009

Amount: up to $500,000 per state

Kresge Foundation Announces Community Relief Loan Fund; Legal Aid Services Eligible to Apply

Grant Opportunity: Avon Foundation

Avon Foundation has a new round of grants concerning domestic violence. They fund legal services programs. The Avon Foundation launched the Speak Out Against Domestic Violenceprogram in 2004 to raise awareness of this tragic epidemic and to help break the cycle of violence. Speak Out supports awareness, education, prevention and direct service programs. Proposals will be accepted from domestic violence service providers and legal service providers that:
