Soros Gives $35 Million to Support Low-Income Families in New York

George Soros, chairman of the Open Society Institute, announced that he will give $35 million to support low-income families in New York with buying school supplies and clothing for the new school year.  This money will go to the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and is in addition to the $140 million in stimulus dollars under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families emergency contingency fund of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Under the program, families on food stamps or other forms of public assistance will be eligible to receive the funds. The source of funding could potentially benefit legal services funding and may be worth exploring as another resource.
