Tracking Stimulus Spending May Not Be as Easy as Promised

Obama administration's www.Recovery.gov promises to track stimulus funding to the street level but they may have set a high bar.  This Washington Post article discusses the challenges Recovery.gov, not to be confused with Recovery.org (a privately run site that also tracks stimulus spending), faces in tracking stimulus-funded projects.  Earl E. Devaney, inspector general to Department of Interior, is now in charge of stimulus oversight and explains that site will not produce much data until October when grant recipients must file their full reports. Meanwhile, other federal sites like www.FedBizOpps.gov and www.USAspending.gov offer some stimulus data but are only limited to federal contracts. Devaney recently held an online dialogue to solicit ideas from the public about the site which drew 1,600 participants. He is confident that the site will develop with time.
